Katarina began to skate when she was five years old. Her natural talents began to show, she received an entry into a Karl-Marx-Stadt school that is geared towards kids with a sporty ability. This was where she was introduced to her coach Jutta Muller. Witt made her breakthrough in 1982, after she placed second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. In the years since, Witt's grace and beauty have captivated the attention of everyone. Olympic victory at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt fought hard in a tightly battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. The victory she won four years earlier was even closer. She actually lost the free-skating competition, but earned the gold medal based on her performance during the compulsory figure and the short-form program. Witt is the only female figure skater to win the same event twice since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating following her successes in the film industry as an actress. She took part in the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Although she didn't take home a single gold medal, she delighted fans with her seventh place finish. In 1995, Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
